Saint Peter's was an obligatory stop for both pilgrims and tourists to Rome. Panini made numerous versions of this view, updating them in accordance with additions and alterations to the basilica. The earliest version is a large canvas in the Louvre, Paris, painted in 1730 for the French ambassador, Cardinal Melchior de Polignac. The Met's picture postdates 1754, when the statues of Saint Theresa of Avila and Saint Vincent de Paul in the niches of the first two pilasters on the right were erected.

The architect, painter Giovanni Paolo Panini was a European artist, whose artistic style can be attributed mainly to Baroque. The Baroque painter was born in the year 1691 in Piacenza, Piacenza province, Emilia-Romagna, Italy and died at the age of 74 in the year 1765 in Rome, Roma province, Lazio, Italy.
