This painting may depict a specific person as in a traditional portrait. The less formal costume and the tight focus on the head, however, may mean that it is a tronie, a popular category of painting among Dutch painters in the 1600s. Gerrit Dou was a painter from the Netherlands, whose style can be classified as Baroque. The Baroque artist was born in the year 1613 in Leyden, South Holland, Netherlands and died at the age of 62 in the year 1675.
