This unique urban scene by Gustave Courbet was painted between 1850 and 1851 in the barracks of Poissy. For the sake of realism, the artist would have asked firefighters to perform a sham starting at torchlight. This ambitious work, but unfinished complex was found rolled up in the studio to the death of the painter.
