Paul Gauguin came to be one of the most famous proponents of artistic primitivism, and his early adoption of this style was influenced heavily by his own experiences beyond Europe, particularly in Polynesia. From 1895, Gauguin settled there for good, living mostly on Tahiti and Hiva Oa Island. In this painting Gauguin depicts a religious scene: one which he most likely saw while living in Polynesia. The bright colours, flattened spaces and simplified shapes are typical of Gauguin's Post-Impressionist and proto-primitivist style.
